It was the day that will live in infamy. Apple on the verge of collapse. Steve Jobs in dire need. So he calls on the only person that can help – Bill Gates. Well, it didn’t happen that way. But in 1997, at MacWorld Expo, the two come together to announce a five year alliance. Microsoft buys $150 Million of non-voting stock into Apple and hold it for 3 years. January 5, 1984: GNU Project Founded

1984 – Richard Stallman quit his job at MIT to begin the writing of GNU software. GNU – a recursive acronym for “Not Unix” and reference to the song “the Gnu” – is an operating system that is compatible with Unix software. Stallman wanted to bring a free software operating system for the masses to use as they needed. The open source community would then be able to grow the OS with their own code additions. January 5: CES and MacWorld

For the next week, you’ll hear a lot about “At CES” or “At MacWorld“. This is because Macworld and Consumer Electronics shows both competed during this week. Of course it wasn’t until 2009 where Macworld had to retool it’s date because Apple pulled completely out of the event. For example, today 1985, Atari introduced the Atari XE and ST lines of computers. The Atari 520ST was dubbed the “Jackintosh” because the Atari was as powerful as a Mac at half the price.
