Lou Gerstner replaces John Akers as chairman and CEO of IBM. Gerstner is credited with having saved IBM from going out of business in the early nineties, in one of the most remarkable turn-abouts in business history.

In the lawsuit of Intel versus Cyrix, Cyrix agrees to a settlement, agreeing to acknowledge the term “MMX” as an Intel trademark.

Intel releases 2.3 and 2.4 GHz Celeron processor, for low-price computers. Price: US$117 and US$127

Google’s free Webmail “Gmail” service, is released as an invitation-only beta. The service will be opened to the public on February 7, 2007.

2008
Windows Mobile 6.1 is unveiled at the CTIA conference Microsoft confirms Open XML has been approved by the ISO and is now officially a Standard. A New York Judge rules that the RIAA cannot sue simply because the song is up on KaZaa. They must provide sharing transaction information before any legal action can proceed.

2009
QuickPlay Media announces they will be offering a TV download service for Blackberry. They will offer through the RIM application store.

Google announces that their servers are built in-house. Each server is designed with a built in battery for backup

Toshiba purchases the remaining 40 percent of Panasonic’s LCD business. The buyout cost 2 billion yen, or $20 million.

Intel and GE announce a health care tech alliance that targets in-home health care.

AMD announced a multi-year agreement with Mentor Graphics to embed AMD processors and Systems on a Chip (SoC) for internet appliances.
