1882 – Thomas Edison created more tech history when he was granted a patent for the carbon microphone for the telephone. The carbon was in between two cups and attached to the mouthpiece. The diaphragm would change pressure, causing the carbon to be pushed upon. That would send electric current to the other end – which would transpose it back to audio.

2009 – You can be #2, and still not be doing all that great. This was the case for Circuit City. A failed buyout opportunity from Blockbuster and they were at the same point as CompUSA a couple years prior. Therefore, officials announced they will be closing the remaining stores and selling all assets.Ironically enough, Circuit City’s website assets were acquired by SystemMax – the same company that holds Comp USA’s web assets.

1968 – Ralph Baer applies for a patent on a TV game system he designed. This, of course, sparks the Video Game age and Ralph becomes the inventor and Pioneer of the field. In 2006, he was honored with a National Medal of Technology for the advancement.

1914 – Although the Model T has been around since 1908, the first Ford Model T that was made on an assembly line was completed. This, of course, brought a new wave to the Auto and manufacturing industries. Ford has since been a leader in cars in the US.Interesting side-note: Henry Ford was on the cover of Time Magazine on Jan 14, 1935.

1984 – Two days after the announcement of the 264 and 364 computers, CEO Jack Tramiel resigned from Commodore. There was a lot of battling within the board of directors. 6 months after Tramiel left, he started another company called “Trammel” and hired away a few of the key Commodore employees. The company was one of those that bought – then sold – Atari.

1996 – Apple had been declining in the last few years. With Michael Spindler at the helm and a host of problems with the failed Lisa project, the company had been dealing with loss after loss. The $68 Million first quarter loss was a wake up call for Apple to change guard. On Feb 2nd, Gil Amelio would replace Michael Spindler as CEO, who in turn would bring Steve Jobs back into the mix and ultimately loose that position to the former CEO.

1998 – We know this as a time where Apple had reeled in all it’s clones and became a proprietary company. However, there was one clone to the G3 Mac. Umax had won this contract due to the face that Apple penetration to certain markets was not there and UMax was. This is an interesting parallelism:1990 – Time Inc. acquires Warner Communications for $14.1 Billion.
2000 – AOL purchases Time Warner for $165 Billion in stock. The merger would finally complete on Jan 11 2001 when the Federal Trade Commission approves the merger.
AOL and Time Warner continue a relationship until 2009 when the two companies finally split.
