2001– Jan de Wit – a.k.a. “OnTheFly” sends out an email stating that it is a picture of the famous tennis player. Of course it turned out to be a a Worm that takes down tens of thousands of computers. Most companies will shut off their email to the world just to prevent from getting it. De Wit would then be arrested two days later and sentenced to 150 hours community service.

1997 – Gil Amelio just was just removed as CEO of Apple. People were calling for Steve Jobs to return, but others thought that would be a bad investment. At a Garner Symposium, Michael Dell was asked what he would do with Apple. He came back in saying:

“I’d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders.” – Michael Dell

Had Apple done that, we might see a completely different market out there. Then again, we might just see the OS X as the NeXT OS on a regular PC – with NeXTpods and NeXTpad (instead of iPad).Steve Jobs had always run a war of words with Dell. However, this comment could have actually been a fuel for Jobs fire. In fact, in 2006, Jobs sent an email to employees after Apple surpassed Dell in market share. It said:

Team, it turned out that Michael Dell wasn’t perfect at predicting the future. Based on today’s stock market close, Apple is worth more than Dell. Stocks go up and down, and things may be different tomorrow, but I thought it was worth a moment of reflection today. – Steve Jobs

Remembering 9-11 Day

2008 – TiVO and Research in Motion (RIM) announce they will collaborate to give people another option to record their favorite shows. Coming soon, you would be able to set your DVR and review schedules right from your Blackberry device. That way if you forget to set your recorder, you can call up the application and make the change.

It was also the historic day that New York City’s Twin Towers were taken down by a terrorist attack. We at the Day in Tech History commemorate the 10 year anniversary and take a moment of silence in the show to remember those who lost their lives.

2011 – Carol Bartz sends an email to her (former) staff at Yahoo!

To all:
I am very sad to tell you that I’ve just been fired over the phone by Yahoo’s Chairman of the board. It has been my pleasure to work with all of you and I wish you only the best going forward.

2001 – Mark Cuban and Phillip Garvin launch HDNet, the first High Definition TV signals. It was available both through cable and satellite television. The channel got some news for their exclusive HD coverage of the US invasion of Afghanistan.
