1968 – Haleyville, Alabama. The first 911 call in the US is officially used – 35 days after AT&T implements the emergency call number. Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite placed the call at 2 PM to Congressman Tom Bevill to officially inaugurate the system. 911 was created because it was not in use within US phone systems. Alabama got wind that AT&T was planning to create the first 911 dispatch center in Huntington, Indiana, so he decided to independently build their system. 2003– Caldera International finished the acquisition of the Server Software and Services divisions of Santa Cruz Operation. They turned around and officially renamed to the SCO group. The focus was more to the UNIX platform. The SCO group was in a major lawsuit with Novell until Masrch 2010 when the courts ruled that Novell had the proper rights to the SCO properties in the Linux OS. 2001– The Server version of the Mac OS X software hit in 1999, but the desktop version was not released until 2001. A POSIX compliant core OS with the XNU kernal. The OS X (pronounced OS ten) was based from the OPENSTEP software, which came from Steve Jobs other company: NeXT (Apple purchased NeXT in 1996).
