February 16, 1979: First BBS Created

1978 – The first computer bulletin board system was created in Chicago, Illinois by Ward Christensen and Randy Suess. The Computerized Bulletin Board System (CBBS) came together in 30 days, where it was then launched. Even though it was already turned on for testing, today was the day CBBS went into production.

February 4, 1997 – Apple Acquires NeXT Computer

1997 – Apple Computer makes the acquisition of NeXT for $427 million. The OpenStep OS will be the base of Mac OS X. Steve Wozniak returns to Apple as an executive committee member. Gil Amelio – with Steve Jobs as his advisor – makes plans to restructure Apple. Finally, Bill Gates publicly states that he is very interested in continuing to work with Apple.

1968 – Haleyville, Alabama. The first 911 call in the US is officially used – 35 days after AT&T implements the emergency call number. Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite placed the call at 2 PM to Congressman Tom Bevill to officially inaugurate the system.

911 was created because it was not in use within US phone systems. Alabama got wind that AT&T was planning to create the first 911 dispatch center in Huntington, Indiana, so he decided to independently build their system.

Haleyville’s 911 system was built during off-hours and was completed within a week. Robert Fitzgerald built the system at B.W. Gallagher’s request.

2014 – Microsoft appointed Satya Nadella to replace Steve Ballmer as CEO of Microsoft. The change happened immediately after the appointment. Ballmer announced his retirement on Aug 23, 2013 and would step down the moment a new CEO was named.

Nadella has been with Microsoft since 1992. He has spearheaded Microsoft’s Cloud infrastructure, along with the server and tools business.

“Having worked with him for more than 20 years, I know that Satya is the right leader at the right time for Microsoft,” said Steve Ballmer. “I’ve had the distinct privilege of working with the most talented employees and senior leadership team in the industry, and I know their passion and hunger for greatness will only grow stronger under Satya’s leadership.”

Ballmer would retain his spot on the Board of Directors, along with Bill Gates.

June 6, 2011 Steve Jobs gave his last keynote for Apple

2005 – Steve Jobs spoke in front of the masses at the WWDC announcing that Apple will switch their processors from PowerPC to Intel. He then showed off the Mac OS X running on aPentium 4 CPU. The reasoning was that PowerPC chips took too much power to run and also ran hotter than an Intel chip.

2011 – It was also a sad day, as Apple CEO Steve Jobs gave what was to become his last keynote at WWDC. He introduced us to iCloud – a new service so you do not need a computer to connect your iPad or iPhone. iOS got an upgrade to version 5, and Jobs announced Mac OSX Lion. Also announced was iTunes Match, a way to keep your music in the cloud.

May 21, 2003: Caldera International becomes the SCO Group

2003– Caldera International finished the acquisition of the Server Software and Services divisions of Santa Cruz Operation. They turned around and officially renamed to the SCO group. The focus was more to the UNIX platform. The SCO group was in a major lawsuit with Novell until Masrch 2010 when the courts ruled that Novell had the proper rights to the SCO properties in the Linux OS.

2001– The Server version of the Mac OS X software hit in 1999, but the desktop version was not released until 2001. A POSIX compliant core OS with the XNU kernal. The OS X (pronounced OS ten) was based from the OPENSTEP software, which came from Steve Jobs other company: NeXT (Apple purchased NeXT in 1996).

The first version of Mac OS X was code named “Cheetah” (the public beta was “Kodiak”). From there, we had Apple Macintosh OS X Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, and soon to be released Mountain Lion.

1995– The worlds first Wiki was created as Ward Cunningham invites people to add and edit content. WikiWikiWeb was officially launched on March 25th, as A Wiki is a database that can be a community collaboration. Six years later, Wikipedia is launched.
