Happy National Pi Day – The celebration of 3.14

1988 – It’s the song that found it’s rebirth and the term “Rick Rolled” became a urban saying. Of course, we are talking about Rick Astley and the song: Never Gonna Give You Up. It hit #1 on the charts. Of course, it’s internet fame has turned this into a whole new beast.

March 13, 1986: Microsoft gets an IPO

1986-$21.00 a share was the first price for stock in Microsoft. 2.5 million shares were sold, raising the price to 27.75 and netting the company 61 million initially. Since then, the highest it has gone was 57.91 on Dec 24th, 1999. Yet with about 10 stock splits and several dividends in the 24 years, people definitely got their money’s worth. If you would have purchased 100 shares in 1986 and let those shares ride until today, you would have 102,400 shares of stock at appx. $29 a share.

March 8, 1983: IBM PC XT

1983 -IBM announces the IBM Personal Computer XT (eXtended Technology). It features a Intel 8088 processor,  10MB hard drive, 128 kB RAM, 40Kb ROM and double-sided 360 kB floppy drive. For $4995, it’s all yours. The machine was also called IBM Machine Type number 5160.The XT could support up to 256 kb on the motherboard. You could get expansion cards to raise to 640 kb. The 8088 processor ran at 4.77 MHz. It weighed 32 lbs (desktop only) and was 19.5 inches wide by 16 inches deep and 5.5 inches high.

The IBM PC XT was the successor to the IBM PC. It was developed until April 1987.

1950– Silly Putty – the stretchable goo that picks up print off a newspaper – is introduced. Peter Hodgson first introduced James Wright’s idea by packaging one ounces into a plastic egg. Interesting facts about Silly Putty – It has some adhesive attributes, which can make it a great way to pick up dirt and pet hair. Silly Putty bounces like a ball and will break when given a sharp blow. Silly Putty is also known as Thinking Putty and is made of Silocone Polymer. It was originally created to be a rubber substitute for use in World War II.

1997– US Senator Orrin Hatch holds a hearing on the Antitrust activities of Microsoft. Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems and Jim Barksdale of Netscape Communications were present to question if Microsoft is intentionally pushing out the Netscape web browser for Internet Explorer. Of course, this would become a long drawn out investigation which almost splits Microsoft into separate companies.

Happy Leap Day! We get to do this special episode once every four years, so here is your Leap Day in Tech History!

1996 – Atari moves it’s  offices from 1196 Borregas Avenue in Sunnyvale, CA to 455 South Mathilda Avenue in Sunnyvale,CA. The new location gives Atari 7,208 square feet. It was a Bank of America building, and still had the vault door. Jack Tramiel, Sam Tramiel, Leonard Tramiel, Garry Tramiel, Dave Schwartz, John Skruch, Donald A. Thomas, Jr., Scott Sanders, Max Fagan, and Gayle McKim occupied the offices.

1995 – After 15 million lines and 3 years of programming,Microsoft announces Windows 95 (a.k.a. Chicago) was deemed “Golden“.That meant Microsoft could not make any more fixes or adjustments would be made until it’s release on August 24th. Of course, Microsoft Windows 95 was their first 32-bit operating system and considered a major game changer in the world of computers.

Geekazine Fact: Jeffrey Powers got his IT career as a support agent for Windows 95.

2011 – The US waited for this Swedish music streaming service, and on this day, we got it. Founded in 2006, Spotify announced after exhaustive negotiation with four major US record labels, they were given the green light to launch. It came with much praise from the online community. Since then, Spotify was integrated with Facebook, and launched their own apps and app finder.

1923 – HollywoodLand Sign is dedicated to the people in Los Angeles CA. The sign was shortened to Hollywood where it stands overlooking LA.

2011 – CEO Reed Hastings announced a bombshell that, in turn, brought on Netflix’s single worst year ever. He announced that they were splitting Netflix streaming from DVD rentals. With that, the price would be doubled – $8 for 2 DVD rental plan and $8 for streaming. If you were an existing customer, you would be grandfathered in until September. This news caused their stock to fall, which continued when Hastings announced the DVD division was to be rebranded as Qwikster, and sold (which, of course, didn’t happen).

1985: Live Aid was first held. The event was organized by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for Ethiopian famine releif. Over 175,000 people attended what was called the global jukebox. The concert was held simultaneously in Wembley Stadium in London, England, United Kingdom and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It was one of the first and largest shows broadcast on satellite in 1985.
