March 23, 2001: Mir Crashes Down in Deorbit

2001 – It’s called the “Deorbit” – Space Station Mir was a controlled re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere. Ultimately, the space station burned up over the ocean by New Zeland. Some parts of Mir could survive the re-entry process, so putting the ship over a large body of water was the best way to reduce casulties. Still, New Zeland was at full alert if winds brought large pieces inland. The official statement had Mir at complete Deorbit around 5:59:24 GMT. October 27, 1999: Dell PC Sales Were #1

1999 – Dataquest, a company that monitors PC sales, has shown a trend that Dell had maintained a 5% lead over Apple for 2 consecutive quarters. Therefore, Dell had become #1 in computer sales for 1999. August 17, 2006: Dell Adds AMD Processors

Dell announced in 2006 they will begin putting AMD processors into Dimension desktops and later in the year Dell AMD servers will be available. On that same day, they announced that after an internal investigation into its accounting practices Dell would restate and reduce earnings from 2003 through Q1 2007.  A total amount of between $50 million and $150 million was deducted – 2 cents to 7 cents per share. May 18, 2001: Shrek is Released

2001 – The computer animated movie “Shrek” hits theaters. The 90 minute movie was produced on a $60 million budget and although it’s first weekend only saw $42 million , the overall theatrical run brought in $487 million. Shrek was the first computer animated film to win an Academy Award (Best Animated Feature). May 18, 2012: Facebook Goes Public – 2001: Shrek is Released

2012 – After much speculation, Facebook shares go public under “FB”. The stock started at $38 a share but instantly dropped. Stock dropped to $26 / share by years end. March 23, 2006: Dell Purchases Alienware

2006 – The purchase of Alienware was a calculated one. Dell has wanted to purchase the company for 4 years before they proceeded. The financial terms were not disclosed, but Dell did say that they were keeping both companies separate and there would be no cross marketing.Alienware was concidered the gaming PCs to have in the first half of 2000. They rebranded headsets and other peripherals to go with their high-customized gaming laptops and desktops. Alienware was founded in 1996 by Nelson Gonzalez and Alex Aguila.
