GNU – a recursive acronym for “Not Unix” and reference to the song “the Gnu” – is an operating system that is compatible with Unix software. Stallman wanted to bring a free software operating system for the masses to use as they needed. The open source community would then be able to grow the OS with their own code additions.
Even though no real stable version of GNU yet exists, Linux is based on the GNU kernel.

The Perl written program – Written by Dan Famer and Wietse Venema – was released to help network admins find vulnerabilities in their remote systems. For the next week, you’ll hear a lot about “At CES” or “At MacWorld“. This is because Macworld and Consumer Electronics shows both competed during this week. Of course it wasn’t until 2009 where Macworld had to retool it’s date because Apple pulled completely out of the event.
For example, today 1985, Atari introduced the Atari XE and ST lines of computers. The Atari 520ST was dubbed the “Jackintosh” because the Atari was as powerful as a Mac at half the price.
