July 8, 2007: A major DNS patch was released after a bug Dan Kaminsky found

In 2007, developer Dan Kaminsky found a flaw in the addressing of the Domain Name System, or DNS. DNS is found on home to commercial routers around the world. The issue was so severe, that they were not divulging the issue until a patch could be implemented on a wide scale. On March 31st, Kaminsky – along with 16 other developers – gathered at Microsoft to work on a massive patch and synchronize the release so all details could be released as well. 2000 – Remember the days of the Instant Messenger? Yahoo IM or Microsoft Messenger, ICQ, AIM and many more. In 2000, a company called Trillian tried to capitalize on the market by making a IM client that could connect to all of these instant messengers. Only problem is that Yahoo! and Microsoft didn’t want to allow this to happen. They tried to block the software. However, new patches were installed and Trillian was able to access the messengers again.

Trillian (www.trillian.im) is still in existance to this day. You can download for your Mac, PC, Android, iPhone, Blackberry, and more!

Funny thing, in 2004, Microsoft put out a multiple – IM software called IM2.

January 31, 1996: Corel buys WordPerfect

1996 – Corel not only gets WordPerfect form Novell, but also Quattro Pro for $180 million in stock and cash. Michael Cowpland (Founder of Corel) called WordPerfect the “Pepsi to Microsoft’s Coke”. I guess that was not the case as OpenOffice (RC maybe?) surpassed WordPerfect users.WordPerfect and Corel have been in flux since 2006, when Vector Capital purchased 72% of the company. Just this last year, they bought up the remaining stock and became privately held once again.

January 30, 2007: Windows Vista released

2007 – Microsoft releases Windows Vista in many different versions to the public – Home, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, Ultimate, Home Basic N and Business N. With a Codename of “Longhorn”, this was the next version to XP and introduced many new features including the redesigned start button and glass borders. The Ultimate version even had active background, where your desktop picture could be moving.

The OS didn’t live up to expectation and caused a lot of driver errors including machines that were suppose to be “Vista Ready”. Vista was soon replaced by Windows 7.

January 29, 1988: Tetris – spectrum holobyte

1988 – Spectrum Holobyte releases the puzzle game Tetris for the Commodore 64 and IBM PC. This was the first game imported from the Soviet Union. The game was written by Alexi Paszitnov and Vagim Gerasimov at the Computer Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow. The Commodore 64 version would cost you $24.95, and the IBM version cost $34.95.

2003 – 5:30 AM. SQL Slammer worm caused a DDOS, infecting 75,000 within ten minutes. Christopher J. Rouland, the CTO of ISS, named it Slammer. The worm exploited a buffer overflow bug in Microsoft‘s SQL Server and Desktop Engine database products.

2000 – Kevin Mitnick, who was imprisoned for 5 Years in hacking IBM, Motorola and DEC; then a big chase with the FBI, was released from prision. He was still ordered to not log onto a computer.2003 – Kevin Mitnick finally logs back onto the Internet after the 3 year probation. He fought the prohibition from the Internet and got it reduced to 3 years. No word as to where he went on his first login.

1985 – When you hear “Apple Superbowl commercial“, you instantly think a woman running down a hall with a sledgehammer ready to destroy oppression. But there was another commercial. The Yang to the Macintosh Ying.The Lemmings commercial was aired for Super Bowl XIX. It was a commercial for Macintosh Office. Blindfolded businessmen marched off the edge of a cliff to a dark rendition of “Hi Ho”. The last guy in line – realizing his blind mouse wasn’t in front of him anymore, peeked to see what happened – only to find he was one step away from oblivion; Another line of Blind mice coming up behind him.

The big difference in this commercial is that it was a horrific failure. The consumer felt insulted more than enlightened. If that commercial would have aired the year before for Macintosh, Apple would have been done. What a difference a year makes, eh?
